Temps perdu

I was born at the turning point of the mid-century. Two great things were happening: a new miracle drug, penicillin, was coming into widespread use and a book about the Specific Carbohydrate Diet was published.

I was exposed to the drug almost from birth. Every sniffle, sore throat and earache elicited a little green box of pills to be taken every four hours for two weeks. The resulting stomache aches and diarrhea were collateral damage. Doctor's orders must be obeyed.
